Product Review: Dartmoor Flare cranks

As you probably know I’ve been running the Dartmoor Flare cranks for a while now.
I had so much comments from people who love the looks of it. And I think no one
can disagree on that one without lying. But how are these good looking 2.5 piece
cranks their performances?
First of all, by weighing only 814g, these are some really lightweight cranks. The weight
includes the hollow spindle, which has a 19mm diameter, and has 48 splines for extra
strength and stiffness.
The fully heat-treated 4130 Cr-mo crankarms have a 175mm length, which is a nice
average length for cranks. But the barspin-freaks should not be scared about not
having enough clearance between their feet and front wheel, because the 2011
model of the Dartmoor Flare cranks has a 170mm arm-length.
Another great part of these cranks is the strength. I’ve been beating the hell out of
these cranks and they are holding up without any problems. The Dartmoor team riders
are also rocking these same cranks, and they were also not able to break or bend any.
Still the guys at Dartmoor are very progressive on their products, and they will make
these cranks even stronger by adding small gussets on the inner side of the
2011 Flare-, Keipo-, and Thorn- crankarms next to the place where the pedals are assembled.

Another pro on these cranks is the possibility to run microdrive. There’s an extra hole
specially made for sprockets that are smaller than 23T. I personally prefer to run microdrive:
it’s lighter, looks cleaner, and it increases the chance of having hang-ups with your
sprocket on the coping while riding skateparks.
Even the bolt to fit the sprocket is hollowed out to save every gram they could.
Maybe one of the sickest pros, is that these cranks not only have a great quality,
but they are also very cheap: the retail price is only 129.- euros!
Finding any downsides of these cranks was probably the hardest part of this review.
It’s not the weight, because they are really light. It’s not the strength, these cranks are
one of the strongest cranks on the market. It’s not the looks, these cranks are so beautiful.
The only very small detail I managed to find is something that happens to every crank
on the market: the paint comes off a little because of your shoe rubbing against it.
Usually I wouldn’t care at all about this, but these cranks are simply too good looking
to get any paint damage or scratches :) Once I noticed the rub-marks I fitted transparent
tape on it so you can still see how nice the cranks look, but you don’t get any more rub-marks.

In short:
These are some very good looking cranks, which are very strong and very light.
By costing only 129.- euros these are definitely the best cranks you can get for your money.
Why should you even consider paying twice the price of these to get less quality,
or pay less and end up with cranks that you’ll break in a couple of months?
I really recommend these cranks to any street/park/dirt rider out there!
